What if the side of the stairs face the door upstairs?

the information you provided is lacking. but having a stairs right in front of a door is not really a bad thing. though in many simple fengshui books, such a situation is considered as a bad thing. it is only a bad thing, when the stairs is steep and long. if the stairs is steep and long, just color it red and have bright light lighting the stairs. you just need to note that you cannot do this remedy if the stairs is pointing to the southwest or northeast, of the stairs is located at the southwest or northeast in relation to the center of the house. bec in fengshui or at the chinese believe that the sw-ne line is a doorway of souls/ spirits, and when you color this area red or have bright light, you tend to “activate” this area, which can cause some apparitions or weird things happening.
i don’t like to use the remedy esp if you know the fengshui methods, which are more powerful. regarding the stairs, it is important that you put it in an area with good chi. again chi is an energy that cannot be felt nor sensed even if you are a psychic, it can only be calculated using fengshui methods like flying stars. if you put the stairs in a good chi area, the more you use the stairs, the more that the good chi will manifest in your life – depends on the characteristic of the chi.

if the house is already built, it will be harder, but still possible to tilt the door to a certain degree to shift the chi distribution inside the house. again you need to know the method.
